SARAH MCRAE MORTON
Sarah McRae Morton | The Barnacle And Belfry | Foster White Gallery | The paintings were dreamt up during a practice of climbing the bellower of a cathedral in Germany – a training regimen to prepare to hike in the Rockies this spring, but also a meditation during a spiral clockwise ascent. DNA came to mind, the geologic stories encrypted in the stone of the tower came to life, and the history of building cathedrals in Europe became of interest – particularly the fits and starts that resulted from times of war, plague, cataclysmic weather. The show’s title is also a reference to the poem „Let this Darkness Be a Bellower“ by Rainer Maria Rilke. The barnacle is among other interconnected organisms in the paintings. The host is the subject of many, from the portrait of a prized pangolin, to a barnacle dazzled whale, to an airborne figure jumping picket fences into new territory, to a tortoise with a hare painted on its back. | YouTube
